BREAD: A SWEET SURRENDER (The Musical Journey of David Gates, James Griffin & Co.)
by Malcolm C. Searles
Originally published and distributed by Helter Skelter Publishing (UK) in 2014, the hardback edition was received to (mostly) unanimous praise from both Bread fans and music historians alike, and swiftly sold out. The UK paperback edition that followed also sold exceedingly well before it too went out of print. However, in 2019 the book was given a US distribution deal via Post Hill Press and became available throughout North America. This second edition (with a slightly alternative front cover layout and differing inside images) was also readily available worldwide via online retailers such as Amazon, up until 2025 when the deal ended.
2025 UPDATE – Now, with gracious thanks to the BREAD Tribute Band – TOAST – who assisted in getting the book republished in Paperback, Hardback, Kindle AND Audiobook, BREAD ‘A Sweet Surrender’ (The Toast Edition)*, is available again for the THIRD TIME ! Plus, as a bonus, the original series of photo plates (that were left out of the Post Hill Press Edition) are now re-included…

However, the phenomenal success of these ballads swept their more progressive music aside, and internal disagreements followed – lawsuits, intermittent solo careers – before the bitterness was briefly put aside for their successful 1990s reunion tour. Sadly, tragedy was to follow shortly afterwards with the passing of three of the band members…
* The ‘TOAST EDITION’ is exactly the same as the original edition and was only renamed accordingly as a huge THANK YOU to the band !
